Bour

Bøur is a cluster of black tarred houses with turf roofs on the western shore of Vágar, and the reason it appears in every photograph of the islands is what lies offshore: Tindhólmur, an islet rising in five sharp peaks, with the flat island of Gásholmur beside it and Mykines beyond on a clear day. The village church dates from 1865. The road continues from here towards Gásadalur through the tunnel. The name means the infield, the walled home ground of a Faroese farm, and the village is already named in the Dog Letter of about 1350.

When to go

May to September is the season. Sunset light on Tindhólmur is the classic photograph. Fog frequently hides the islet.

Practical notes

The village is tiny, parking is very limited and the roadside fills with photographers. Residents live here and gardens are private. Fog closes the view often.
