Bøur is a cluster of black tarred houses with turf roofs on the western shore of Vågar, and the reason it appears in every photograph of the islands is what lies offshore: Tindhólmur, an islet rising in five sharp peaks, with the flat island of Gåsholmur beside it and Mykines beyond on a clear day. The village church dates from 1865. The road continues from here towards Gåsadalur through the tunnel. The name means simply the infield, the walled and manured home ground of a Faroese farm, and the village grew inside one.

When to go
May to September is the season. Sunset light on TindhĂłlmur is the classic photograph. Fog frequently hides the islet.
Honest expectations
The village is tiny, parking is very limited and the roadside fills with photographers. Residents live here and gardens are private. Fog closes the view often.
