Fjallavatn is the second largest lake in the Faroes, lying in the empty northern half of Vágar with no road to it and no settlement on its shores. Walking in from Vatnsoyrar or over from Gásadalur takes a few hours across open hill ground, boggy in places and unmarked for much of the way. Great skuas nest on the moor around it and will dive at walkers who come near their nests in summer.

When to go
June to September is the walking season. Fog makes navigation genuinely difficult on featureless moor. Skuas are aggressive at nests in June and July.
Honest expectations
There is no marked path and navigation in fog is a real problem; a map and compass are needed. The ground is boggy and slow. Nesting skuas dive at walkers and can draw blood.
