Emba Soira rises to around 3,018 metres in the southern highlands and is the highest point in Eritrea, a broad summit on the plateau edge rather than a peak, with the ground falling away east toward the Danakil lowlands. The walk up is over open highland with terraced fields on the lower slopes and grass and scrub above. The view east on a clear day runs a very long way down the escarpment.

What you actually see

  • The summit - around 3,018 metres, the highest ground in the country.
  • The escarpment edge - the drop east toward the Danakil lowlands.
  • The terraced fields - cultivation on the lower slopes.
  • The eastern view - the long outlook down toward the coast on clear days.

When to go

October to May is drier and clearer. The main rains from June to September make the tracks difficult. Highland nights are cold year round.

Honest expectations

A travel permit is required and access is checked. There is no marked path and a guide is needed. Facilities are none and water must be carried.

Nearby

Senafe is south, and the Danakil is east.
