Cogo sits on the Muni estuary in Equatorial Guinea's far south, a small town on the water with Gabon on the far bank and mangrove running in every direction, and it was a trading post through the colonial period with a few buildings surviving from then. Boats work the estuary and cross to the Elobey islands. The town is quiet and the estuary around it is the reason to come.

What you actually see

  • The estuary - the wide mangrove-lined water the town sits on.
  • The Gabon shore - the far bank across the water.
  • The colonial remains - the buildings surviving from the trading period.
  • The boat traffic - craft working the estuary and the islands.

When to go

December to February is the drier season and the roads are better. The rains make the long drive from Bata slow. Tide governs boat movement in the estuary.

Honest expectations

The drive from Bata takes around three hours on a rough road. Facilities are minimal. Border proximity means checkpoints and paperwork.

Nearby

The Elobey islands are offshore, and the Muni estuary reserve is around it.
