Athribis lies at the desert edge west of the Nile near Sohag, a temple complex begun under Ptolemy XII and continued into the Roman period for the lion goddess Repit and her consort Min, with a hall of columns, painted astronomical ceilings and reliefs that survive in unusually good condition because the site was buried. German and Egyptian excavation has run here since 2003, clearing the temple and the settlement, quarries and rock tombs around it. Its best known yield is textual: tens of thousands of inscribed pottery sherds have been recovered, including a large group from what appears to have been a school, with lines written out repeatedly as punishment exercises, bird and number lists, and drawings, giving a very direct view of ancient teaching.

What you actually see

  • Painted astronomical ceilings - zodiac and sky figures in colour.
  • The columned temple hall - Ptolemaic and Roman work well preserved.
  • School ostraca finds - sherds with repeated lines and pupil drawings.
  • Quarries and rock tombs - the workings in the cliff behind the temple.

When to go

October to April. Two hours. Excavation seasons affect what is accessible, so parts may be fenced. Mornings for light in the hall. Almost nobody visits.

Honest expectations

This is a working excavation and access varies with the season and the director's permission. There is no signage or visitor route. The ostraca are in study collections, not on display here. Local guidance is needed to find it, and regional escort arrangements can apply.

Nearby

The White and Red monasteries are north-west; Sohag is across the valley.
