Angkor Thom and the Bayon

Angkor Thom was the last great capital of the Khmer empire, a vast walled and moated royal city entered through five monumental gates topped with serene stone faces. At its very heart stands the Bayon, one of the most extraordinary temples in the world, a mountain of stone from which more than two hundred giant, enigmatic faces gaze out in every direction with a mysterious, serene smile, alongside the Terrace of the Elephants and other wonders, all part of UNESCO Angkor.

What to look for

• The Bayon - the temple of over two hundred giant serene stone faces.
• The city gates - the monumental face-topped gates of Angkor Thom.
• The Terrace of the Elephants - the great carved royal viewing terrace.
• Baphuon and Phimeanakas - the other temples within the walled city.

When to go

November to February, the cool dry season, for the most comfortable weather; the Bayon's faces catch the light beautifully in the early morning or late afternoon, when it is also less crowded than midday.

Good to know

It is one of the highlights of a multi-day Angkor visit, so it is best not rushed; the enigmatic faces of the Bayon are best in the softer light of morning or late afternoon. It is hot and busy, so start early. A modest dress code applies, with shoulders and knees covered. A guide greatly enriches the astonishing carvings.
