Salto de Aguas Blancas

Aguas Blancas falls roughly eighty metres in two stages down a dark rock face in the mountains above Constanza, at around one thousand seven hundred metres, and it is fed by streams running off the Valle Nuevo plateau. The setting is pine forest rather than jungle, which makes it look unlike anything else people expect from the Caribbean, and the water comes off the high plateau cold enough that swimming in the pool at the base is a brief and shrieking business. The track in from Constanza is rough and climbs through terraced fields of strawberries, garlic and flowers, crops that only work at this altitude and that supply the whole country.

When to go

November to April is drier and the track more reliable; the fall runs all year but the road can wash out after storms. Mornings are clearest before mountain cloud builds. The valley is cold at night and mornings can be near freezing in winter.

Good to know

The access track is rough enough to need four-wheel drive or a hired local vehicle; ordinary cars struggle and hire companies often forbid it. The water is genuinely cold, not refreshing. The final steps down to the pool are steep and slippery. Facilities are minimal.
