Salto Alto de Bayaguana

Salto Alto lies in wooded hills a short distance from Bayaguana, where a river drops in a single fall of around twenty metres into a deep green pool enclosed by rock and vegetation, cold enough to be a shock in the heat. A short walk from the parking reaches it. The surrounding country is a mix of cattle pasture and remaining forest, and the site is used mostly by Dominican visitors rather than foreign ones.

When to go

November to April is drier with clearer water. Rain raises the river and makes the pool unsafe. Weekends bring local groups.

The track in is rough and difficult after rain. The pool is deep and cold with no supervision. Facilities are minimal.
