The San Rafael river comes off the Sierra de Bahoruco and reaches the Caribbean on the Barahona coast road, and in the last hundred metres pools have been formed with low stone walls so that the cold mountain water can be sat in beside the warm sea. The beach itself is pebble and the surf is heavy. Food stalls line the road above. It is the best known of a series of similar river-mouth sites along this coast.

What you actually see

  • The cold river pools - mountain water held in walled basins beside the sea.
  • The beach - the pebble shore where the river meets the Caribbean.
  • The mountain backdrop - the Sierra de Bahoruco rising directly behind.
  • The food stalls - the fried fish sold along the road above.

When to go

November to April is drier and calmer. The river runs strongest after mountain rain. Weekends and holidays are crowded.

Honest expectations

The sea here has strong surf and undertow and is not a swimming beach. Weekends are crowded and litter is a problem. Facilities are stalls and basic changing sheds.

Nearby

Los Patos is south, and Barahona is north.
