Baní sits in a dry valley west of Santo Domingo where the combination of heat, low rainfall and irrigation produces mangoes that are held across the country as the benchmark, particularly the banilejo and the mango de piña. The season runs from around May into August, roadside stalls line the highway through the town, and a mango festival is held in June with tastings, sales and competitions between growers.

What you actually see

  • The orchards - the mango groves worked in the dry valley around the town.
  • The banilejo - the variety the district is best known for.
  • The roadside stalls - the highway sellers through the town in season.
  • The June festival - the annual event with tastings and grower competitions.

When to go

May to August is the season and the only time the fruit is available fresh. The festival is usually in June. Outside the season the stalls sell other produce.

Honest expectations

Outside the May to August window there is nothing to see. The festival dates move and should be checked. Baní itself is a working town with little else for visitors.

Nearby

Azua is west, and Santo Domingo is east.
