Salto de Baiguate

The Baiguate river drops around twenty five metres into a pool at the bottom of a narrow canyon a short distance from Jarabacoa, and a stepped path with handrails descends into the gorge to reach it, past the rock walls and vegetation growing out of them. The pool can be swum. Canyoning operators run the gorge above the falls, and horseback trips come down from Jarabacoa on the old approach track. The river continues below the falls through a series of smaller pools that see far fewer people than the main basin.

When to go

November to April is drier with safer footing. Rain closes the canyon and raises the river. Mornings are quietest.

Honest expectations

The steps are steep and slippery when wet. The canyon can flood after rain and is closed then. Facilities amount to a car park and a kiosk.
