Playa Forti

Playa Forti sits in the bay at Westpunt, a beach of grey and dark sand rather than the white of the southern coves, with fishing boats at one end and a restaurant on the cliff above serving local food with the whole bay in view. The cliff below the restaurant is the island's best known jumping spot, around eleven metres down into deep water, and there is a steady queue of people working up the nerve.

When to go

Year round; late afternoon is the best light over the bay. Weekends bring local crowds. The jumping ledge is busiest at midday.

Honest expectations

The jump causes injuries every year and there is no supervision. The sand is dark and coarse, which surprises people expecting the postcard beaches. Facilities are the restaurant and little else.
