Ucka is the long ridge that walls off Istria from the Kvarner gulf, rising to Vojak at just over fourteen hundred metres. A squat stone tower stands on the summit, and from its top the whole geography of the region makes sense at once: the Istrian interior on one side, Rijeka and the Kvarner islands on the other, and the Julian Alps visible on a genuinely clear winter day. Below the ridge the park protects beech and chestnut forest, meadows and the Vela Draga canyon, where weathering has left free standing limestone pillars used by climbers. The summit road is narrow and slow, and most people underestimate how much colder it is up there.

What you actually see

  • The Vojak tower - a small stone lookout on the summit with an all round view over Istria and the Kvarner islands.
  • Vela Draga - a canyon of detached limestone pillars below the ridge, with a marked viewpoint and climbing routes.
  • Poklon - the pass and trailhead partway up, the usual starting point for walks along the ridge.
  • The forest belt - beech and sweet chestnut on the inland slopes, sharply different from the bare coast below.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn are best: clear air, wildflowers or leaf colour, and comfortable walking temperatures. Winter brings the sharpest long distance visibility but also ice on the summit road. Summer haze often flattens the view entirely, so if the panorama is the reason for the trip, check conditions before driving up.

Honest expectations

The road to the summit is single lane in places with passing bays and a long drop, and meeting a bus is a slow negotiation. Cloud sits on the ridge often enough that a fair number of visitors reach the tower and see nothing. Wind at the top is strong and cold even in July. Facilities up there are minimal.

Nearby

Opatija and its seafront promenade sit directly below, and Rijeka is half an hour away.
