Buzet sits on a hill above the Mirna valley, and the oak woods below it are the best white truffle ground in Croatia - the record specimens found here have made national news, and the local industry runs on the autumn hunt with trained dogs. The town marks the start of the season at Subotina in September by frying a giant omelette in the main square using around two thousand eggs and a large quantity of truffle, served free to whoever turns up. The old town above is quiet stone streets, a small museum, and a wall walk with the valley below.
What you actually see
- The best white truffle ground in Croatia - the oak woods along the Mirna.
- A two thousand egg omelette - fried in the square each September.
- A quiet stone old town - above the modern part of Buzet.
- Dogs, not pigs - the way truffles are actually hunted here.
When to go
September to November for truffles and Subotina. Half a day.
Honest expectations
Truffle prices are high and quality varies sharply between white and the cheaper summer black. The old town is small and largely residential. Outside the autumn season the town is unremarkable. Parking below and a climb up.
Nearby
Hum and Roc are east; Motovun is down the valley west.
