Yabuli Ski Resort

Yabuli was developed from the 1980s in forested hills east of Harbin and hosted the 1996 Asian Winter Games, which established it as China's first serious ski destination. Its runs are the longest in the country, dropping around eight hundred metres of vertical through birch and pine, with a season running from late November into March or April thanks to natural snow supplemented by machines and temperatures that stay reliably cold. Several resort operators share the mountain, and the accommodation ranges from basic to expensive. Snow quality is dry and cold. Chongli near Beijing has taken much of the market since the 2022 Olympics, but Yabuli has the terrain.

When to go

December to March, with January and February coldest and most reliable; the season can extend into April in good years. Chinese New Year fills the resort. Temperatures regularly fall below minus twenty on the slopes.

Honest expectations

The cold is severe and exposure on lifts is a real consideration. Facilities are dated in places compared with newer Chinese resorts. Access from Harbin takes two to three hours including transfers.
