Baqueira Beret

Baqueira Beret opened in 1964 in the Val d'Aran and has grown into the largest ski area in Spain, with over 160 kilometres of pistes across three linked sectors, Baqueira, Beret and Bonaigua, rising to about 2,500 metres. Its north-facing aspect and Atlantic exposure give it the most reliable snow in the Pyrenees, and the season generally runs from early December into April. The Spanish royal family has skied here since the 1960s, which established its social position and its prices. Off-piste and ski touring terrain in the surrounding valleys is extensive and serious. In summer the lifts run for walkers and mountain bikers, and the valley's villages provide the accommodation rather than a purpose-built resort.

When to go

December to April for skiing, with February and March the most reliable; summer opens some lifts for walking and biking. Spanish school holidays and Easter bring the heaviest crowds and prices.

Honest expectations

It is the most expensive skiing in Spain, in lift passes and accommodation. The drive from Barcelona takes around three hours and the Vielha tunnel queues on peak days. Off-piste here is avalanche terrain and takes lives most seasons.
