Aiguestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici

The park sits on the granite spine of the Lleida Pyrenees and is the only national park in Catalonia. Its name means twisting waters, which is accurate: meltwater braids across flat valley floors and collects in something close to two hundred lakes, the largest of them Sant Maurici under the twin rock towers of Els Encantats. Private cars stop at the boundary, so most people take a shared jeep taxi from Espot on the east side or Boi on the west, then walk. Paths are well marked and mostly gentle near the lakes, steeper on the passes between valleys. Staffed refuges make a multi-day crossing possible without carrying a tent.

When to go

Late June to early October is the reliable window; snow lingers on the passes into June and returns by late autumn. July and August bring the crowds and the full jeep timetable, September the best light and quieter paths. Book refuge beds well ahead for summer weekends, and start early because afternoon storms are common.

Honest expectations

You cannot drive in, and the jeep taxi is a per-person charge each way that adds up for a family. Weather turns fast and cold at altitude even in August. The lakeside paths near Sant Maurici are busy in season, and there is no food inside the park beyond the refuges. Some trails stay wet and muddy all summer.
