Retezat National Park

Retezat was declared Romania's first national park in 1935 and remains its wildest accessible range: granite peaks above 2,500 metres, cirques scoured out by ice, and around eighty glacial lakes scattered across the high basins. Bucura is the largest by surface area in the country and Zănoaga the deepest, and the standard multi-day route links a chain of them by way of high passes and mountain refuges. The park holds chamois in numbers, marmots reintroduced decades ago, and a strictly protected scientific reserve at Gemenele that is closed to visitors entirely. Below the peaks, the Hațeg basin is known for dinosaur fossil sites, including dwarf species that lived on what was then an island.

• The lake circuit - a multi-day route linking the high basins over passes.
• Chamois and marmots - common on the scree and high pastures.
• Hațeg dinosaur country - fossil sites of island-dwarf dinosaurs in the basin below.

When to go

July to September is the reliable window; snow lingers in the high cirques into early summer and returns in October. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent, so start early and be off the ridges by midday.

Honest expectations

This is a genuine mountain area with no cable cars and long approaches on foot, and weather turns fast above the treeline. Refuges are basic and fill in August, so a tent is the safer plan, though camping is restricted to designated areas. Bears are present and food storage matters. The Gemenele scientific reserve is closed to visitors, which surprises people who plan routes through it.
