China Snow Town

Xuexiang, China Snow Town, was a logging settlement in the Zhangguangcai range that receives exceptional snowfall, moisture off the Sea of Japan meeting cold continental air to lay down two metres or more over a season. The snow settles on the timber roofs in thick rounded caps that hang over the eaves, and the village lights red lanterns along its single street after dark, producing the images that made it a national winter destination from around 2013. Sledding, snowmobiles, horse sleighs and a viewpoint above the village fill the days. Its popularity brought problems: reports of overcharging and forced purchases drew national attention and prompted regulation.

When to go

December to February, when the snow is deepest; the season is short and Chinese New Year is the busiest and most expensive period. Temperatures run to minus thirty. Outside winter the village has little to offer.

Honest expectations

The village became notorious for inflated prices and pressure selling, which prompted government intervention; booking through reputable operators matters. Accommodation is basic and expensive in season. Crowds on the single street are heavy.
