Pantai Seri Kenangan

Pantai Seri Kenangan sits on a narrow spit at Tutong with the South China Sea on one side and the Tutong river on the other, so both are visible from the same stretch of sand, which is the reason it is the district's best known beach. Casuarina trees run along it and shelters and stalls operate at weekends. A royal rest house stands at one end of the spit.

Background

The beach belongs to Mukim Pekan Tutong in Tutong District and lies about 2 kilometres west of Tutong town, close to the villages of Sengkarai, Penabai and Kuala Tutong. A community clean-up took place on 1 October 1971, and on 26 March 1972 a ceremony opened the beach as a recreational area and started a weekly market there. The early facilities were made from forest materials such as nibung, rattan, bamboo and wild timber, together with old cable spools, and included thirty sets of tables with benches and four thatched pavilions. The Istana Pantai, from the early 1950s, gave Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III a place to rest when he came to the beach for picnics.

When to go

Year round. Weekends bring families and the stalls operate. Monsoon swell from around November to February makes the sea rough.

Good to know

Currents where the river meets the sea are dangerous and swimming there is unwise. Facilities operate mainly at weekends. Litter after busy periods is a problem.
