Gabon's coast hosts the world's most important leatherback nesting population, and Mayumba is its capital: a sand peninsula running dozens of kilometres between lagoon and open Atlantic, protected as a marine national park, where in season the giant turtles haul out by the hundreds a night at peak - a density unmatched anywhere - while humpback whales breach offshore in their winter months and the beach between arrivals belongs to ghost crabs and fishing eagles. The town is a sleepy fishing outpost; the park runs night patrols that visitors join under red-light rules, and the remoteness that keeps the beach dark for turtles keeps it honest for travellers.

What you actually see

  • The leatherback nights - the densest nesting of earth's largest turtle.
  • The empty peninsula - lagoon-to-ocean sand by the kilometre.
  • Humpbacks offshore - the winter whale window from the beach.
  • The lagoon side - calm-water pirogues and birdlife behind the dunes.

When to go

November to March is nesting's heart, moonless nights best; July to September swaps turtles for humpbacks offshore. Either window, arrange park guiding ahead - this is patrol-accompanied viewing only.

Honest expectations

Getting there is the commitment: flights are sparse, the road long and seasonal, and facilities are basic guesthouses - the reward scales with the effort. Turtle rules are strict and enforced: red lights, distance, no flash, guides' word final. The Atlantic here is for looking; currents rule the swim question.
