The Baths, Virgin Gorda

The Baths, on the island of Virgin Gorda, are the most famous and extraordinary natural sight in the British Virgin Islands, a surreal and beautiful playground of the sea. Here, along a dazzling white-sand beach, enormous granite boulders, some the size of houses and left behind by ancient volcanic activity, are piled and scattered to form a magical labyrinth of sheltered grottoes, sea caves, tunnels and calm, crystal-clear tidal pools. Visitors clamber, wade and swim through this maze of rock and turquoise water, ropes and ladders helping the way, in a genuinely unique and enchanting experience, with fine snorkelling among the boulders and the wider reef.

When to go

December to April, the dry season, for the best weather and calmest seas; the Baths are best explored around low tide, when the pools and passages are easiest, and earlier in the day before the boat crowds and cruise excursions arrive. Calm, clear days are ideal for snorkelling among the boulders.

Honest expectations

The Baths are hugely popular and can get crowded, especially when boats and cruise excursions arrive midday, so an early visit is best, and the scramble through the rocks involves clambering, wading and some tight passages, requiring reasonable agility. The BVI overall is an upscale sailing destination and was hit hard by the 2017 hurricanes. As a genuinely unique and magical natural wonder, though, a maze of giant boulders, grottoes and turquoise pools, the Baths are unmissable and unforgettable.
