Portugal is the rare country a single trip can honestly span: three hours of train separate its great cities, and the whole run fits ten days without strain. North to south, wine to beaches, at the local pace - which is to say, gently.
Days 1-3: Porto and the Douro
Start where the river meets the sea. Porto's Ribeira stacks tiled houses above the Douro, port lodges line the far bank for tastings, and the six bridges frame every sunset. Day three belongs upriver: the Douro Valley's terraced vineyards by train or boat - among Europe's most beautiful wine landscapes, as our wine guide argues. Days 4-6: Lisbon, hill by hill
The capital rewards wandering more than planning: ride the 28 tram through Alfama's tangle, hear fado where it was born, and let the miradouro viewpoints organise the days - each hill delivers the city differently. Down on the river, Belem Tower anchors the age-of-explorers quarter, and the custard tarts at their source settle any pastry debate permanently. Evenings: Bairro Alto's bars or Time Out's market hall, appetite permitting.
Day 7: Sintra, booked and early
An easy train ride delivers the fever-dream: Pena Palace crowning wooded hills in red and yellow, with Moorish castle walls and romantic gardens below. Sintra's fame means strategy - first train out, palace tickets pre-booked, and the quieter Quinta da Regaleira's initiation well as the afternoon's secret.
Days 8-10: the Algarve finish
South by train or quick flight to the Algarve coast: golden cliffs, sea caves (the famous dome-lit one visited by boat or kayak from Benagil), and beaches that hold Europe's best light into October. Base in Lagos for the cliff walks or Tavira for the quiet eastern charm - then do very little, on purpose. That is what the ten days were building toward.
The practical bit
Trains and buses connect everything cheaply; a rental car only earns its keep in the Algarve and Douro backroads. Tipping is a modest round-up, greetings open every door, and August belongs to everyone at once - June and September are the connoisseur months.
