The Algarve is Portugal's sun-drenched southern coast, a string of dramatic ochre sandstone cliffs, hidden coves, sea stacks and golden beaches lapped by the Atlantic. Famous for the sculpted cliffs and sea caves around Lagos and the beautiful Benagil cave, and for its sunny resort towns and seafood, it is the country's holiday coast, at its best out of the peak summer crush.

What you actually see

  • The cliffs and coves - the ochre sandstone cliffs and hidden beaches.
  • The Benagil sea cave - the famous domed cave with a hole to the sky.
  • Lagos and Ponta da Piedade - the sculpted cliffs and sea stacks.
  • The beaches and seafood - the golden sands and coastal grills.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn for warm weather and swimming without the peak crush; July and August are hot, crowded and dear. Boat trips to the sea caves depend on calm seas.

Honest expectations

In peak summer the popular resorts and beaches are crowded and prices high; late spring and early autumn are better. The famous Benagil cave is very busy and reached only from the sea, and since 2024 entry is restricted to licensed boat and guided kayak tours. Some resort strips are heavily developed.

Nearby

Faro and the eastern lagoons, and the wilder west coast, bookend the region; Lisbon is a few hours north.
