Benagil Cave

Benagil is the Algarve's signature interior: a domed chamber carved by the Atlantic into golden sandstone, with a round oculus open to the sky that drops a moving spotlight onto the sandy floor. The sea did the architecture and the light does the rest - mid-morning sun through the skylight turns the whole rotunda amber, and the entrance arches frame blue water against warm stone. Access has been formalised: since 2024 the cave may be entered only on licensed boat trips and guided kayak or paddleboard tours, with no landing on the internal beach and no independent swimming in - rules that ended years of dangerous free-for-all. From above, the Seven Hanging Valleys clifftop trail passes directly over the dome, and you can peer down through the oculus at the sea glowing below.

When to go

Late spring and early autumn balance calm seas with bearable tour queues; mid-morning light through the oculus is the photographer's slot. Winter swell cancels trips at short notice.

Honest expectations

You cannot swim in, land or linger - tours idle inside briefly and move on, and boats queue at the entrances in high season. Book ahead in summer and accept that swell can cancel the whole outing. The clifftop view is free and remarkable if the sea refuses.
