Flinders Ranges and Wilpena Pound

The Flinders Ranges rise out of dry plains north of Adelaide as a long line of folded and eroded rock, and their centrepiece is Wilpena Pound, a rim of quartzite ridges enclosing a basin several kilometres across. Seen from the air it looks like a crater; on the ground it reads as a wall of hills you walk into through a gap. The country is Adnyamathanha land and the Pound, known as Ikara, carries meaning that shapes how visitors are asked to behave, including a request not to stand on the highest summit. West of the Pound, Brachina Gorge cuts a road-accessible section through hundreds of millions of years of sediment, and the ranges hold euros, emus and yellow-footed rock-wallabies.

• Brachina Gorge - a drive through tilted rock layers with interpretive stops.
• Bunyeroo Valley - a winding unsealed road with long views across the ranges.
• Yellow-footed rock-wallabies - the marked colonies on rocky slopes, best seen early or late.

When to go

April to October avoids the worst heat, and after winter rain the plains can carry wildflowers. Walks are best begun at dawn, when the light on the ridges is strongest and the temperature is manageable. School holidays fill the limited accommodation at Wilpena, so book ahead or plan to camp.

Honest expectations

It is a long drive for landscape that rewards patience rather than delivering a single view; the Pound is more convincing from the air than from most ground-level angles, and scenic flights add cost. Summer heat is severe, unsealed roads become impassable after rain, and services are thin. Flies in the warmer months are a genuine nuisance.
