EntryLicensed boat and sanctuary fee

Codrington Lagoon on Barbuda hosts one of the largest magnificent-frigatebird colonies in the world - thousands of the great black seabirds nesting in the mangroves, and in display season the males inflate scarlet throat pouches like balloons, drumming and clattering to passing females while the sky above the colony wheels with two-metre wingspans. Local boatmen run the only access, cutting engines to drift close along the mangrove edge. The colony survived 2017's Hurricane Irma, which devastated Barbuda itself, and stands again as the island's wild crown alongside its miles of pink-sand beach.

What you actually see

  • The scarlet displays - males ballooning their pouches in season.
  • The mangrove nurseries - chicks and juveniles at eye level from the boat.
  • The lagoon crossing - Codrington's shallow inland sea.
  • Barbuda's pink beaches - the 17-mile strand beyond the lagoon.

When to go

Display and nesting run roughly September to April, peaking in the last months of the year - the scarlet-pouch spectacle is then. The Antigua-Barbuda ferry and small flights serve day trips, but seas can be lively; overnighting on Barbuda is the calmer plan.

Honest expectations

Access is weather-dependent twice over - the ferry crossing and the lagoon boat - so build slack. Boatmen are licensed and the fee supports the sanctuary; drones and close approaches are rightly barred. Barbuda's facilities remain modest post-Irma; carry cash and expectations sized accordingly. The birds command silence near the nests - engines off means voices down too.
