The Tristaina circuit is Andorra's essential mountain half-day: from the road-end at the Ordino-Arcalis ski area, a well-marked loop climbs past three glacial lakes - Primer, del Mig and de Mes Amunt - stepped one above another in a granite cirque on the French border, with cotton grass in the wet meadows, marmots whistling from the boulders and the peaks of the Tristaina horseshoe above. The full loop takes two to three unhurried hours, the first lake is reachable by almost anyone, and in July the country's highest sunflower-free meadows bloom with gentians instead.

What you actually see

  • The three lakes - the stepped glacial pools of the cirque.
  • Marmots and gentians - the loop's reliable wildlife and flowers.
  • The border ridge - France one step beyond the top lake.
  • The Arcalis road-end - the highest drivable point in the parish.

When to go

Snow-free roughly late June to September; early summer keeps snow patches at the top lake. July and August weekends bring local crowds to the first lake, thinning sharply above. The Arcalis road closes to the trailhead outside the summer season.

Honest expectations

The loop is easy-moderate but genuinely mountain: weather turns fast, the top sections are rocky, and trainers on wet granite slide. The first lake alone suits families; the full circuit wants proper shoes and a layer. Parking at the road-end fills by mid-morning in August. In winter the same cirque is off-piste terrain, not a walk.

Nearby

Ordino's stone village, the Sorteny botanical valley and the Arcalis ski area.
