Fagatele Bay

Fagatele Bay fills a collapsed volcanic crater on Tutuila's southwest - the heart of the national marine sanctuary, its reef recovering through protection into coral gardens that snorkel quiet and bright when the swell rests, turtles and reef fish working the bowl beneath forested crater walls. The approach path descends from the ridge with the bay's blue circle framing itself, the beach lands small and shadeless, and the sanctuary's rules - no take, light touch - keep the recovery's momentum. Few visitors make it; the bay rewards exactly that arithmetic. The bay is a drowned volcanic crater open to the sea on one side, which is why the water deepens so quickly a short way out from the shore.
