Degersand on the southern shore of Eckerö is one of the few real sand beaches in Åland, where almost every other shore is granite and shingle, a stretch of pale sand backed by pine with shallow water running well out. A small campsite and cafe operate beside it in season. The water warms enough for swimming from around July, which by Baltic standards is as good as it gets.

What you actually see

  • The sand - a genuine sand beach on an archipelago of rock.
  • The shallow water - a gentle shelf running well out from the shore.
  • The pine backing - forest running down to the back of the beach.
  • The seasonal cafe - the small operation beside the beach in summer.

When to go

June to August is the season and July is when the water is warmest. Facilities close outside summer. Weekends and the July holiday are busiest.

Honest expectations

The Baltic is cold and swimming is realistic only for a few weeks. Facilities are seasonal and close early. It is forty minutes from Mariehamn.

Nearby

Käringsund is north, and the Eckerö Post House is northwest.
