The Järsö and Nåtö islands south of Mariehamn are linked by causeways and hold a protected area of deciduous woodland, meadow and shore that is unusually rich for a Baltic archipelago: hazel, oak, elm and ash rather than the pine of the outer islands, with orchids in the meadows and a biological station on Nåtö. Marked paths run through it and the shore is close throughout. The Nåtö manor house stands within the area and the station operates out of its buildings.

When to go
May to September is the season, and late May to June is best for the orchids and leaf. Autumn colour is good in September. Winter leaves the paths snow-covered.
Honest expectations
The reserve is small and the paths are short. Mosquitoes in early summer are a real nuisance. Parts of the area are private and access is restricted.
