Rand Nature Centre

The Rand Nature Centre covers around forty hectares of Caribbean pine forest and coppice on the edge of Freeport and functions as the Bahamas National Trust's base on Grand Bahama: interpretive trails through the pine and a native plant garden, with at least 130 species of native plants. The birding along the trails is the real draw, with Bahama yellowthroat, Bahama swallow and the endemic warblers among the possibilities.

• The pine forest trails - marked walks through Caribbean pine and understorey coppice.
• The forest birds - red-legged thrushes, Cuban emerald hummingbirds and La Sagra's flycatchers in the pines.
• The native plant garden - Bahamian species labelled and grouped.
• The endemic birds - Bahama yellowthroat, Bahama swallow and warblers on the trails.

When to go

November to April is the dry season and the peak for migrant birds. Early morning is best for birding. The centre closes at weekends and on public holidays.

Before you go

It is small and two hours covers it. The pine forest here was badly hit by Hurricane Dorian in 2019 and the recovery is visible and incomplete.
