The Haraz Mountains
The fortress highlands - stone villages riding knife ridges over terraced chasms, Manakha and Al-Hajjara the crowns of vertical Yemen.

West of Sanaa the Haraz stack their astonishment: mountains terraced from valley floor to summit in staircases of coffee and qat, crowned by villages that grow from the ridge rock itself - Al-Hajjara's tower houses rising sheer from a cliff lip, Manakha commanding the trade route it long taxed, dozens of fortified hamlets swapping views across chasms. This is walking country of the highest order when conditions allow: path networks link village to village along the terraces, doors open to guest rooms and saltah lunches, and the architecture - stone towers, white gypsum eyebrows over windows - keeps the medieval highland world in working form.

- Al-Hajjara - tower houses sheer on the cliff lip.
- Manakha's ridge - the trade-road crown of the range.
