Jabal an-Nabi Shu'ayb

Jabal an-Nabi Shu'ayb rises to 3,666 metres west of Sana'a, the highest point in Yemen and in the whole Arabian Peninsula, a bare rounded summit above terraced, farmed slopes. There have been reports of snow on the peak and frost in winter, which is not what the peninsula is generally imagined to produce. The top carries a military post with radar and the purported shrine of the prophet Shu'ayb, whose tomb local belief places on the mountain.

When to go

October to April is the cool season, with snow possible in the coldest months. Summer is milder at this altitude than on the plains. Cloud often covers the summit.

Before you go

Military installations near the summit mean access can be restricted and photography is sensitive. The altitude affects visitors arriving from the coast. Access to mainland Yemen requires arrangements made well in advance.
