Dragon Island

Dragon Island sits in the Dakhla lagoon, a low sandy island with a shape that gave it the name, surrounded by shallow water that drops away at the tide to leave sand flats around it. At low water you can walk out from the shore; at high water you need a boat. Flamingos and waders work the flats and there is nothing built on the island itself.

What you actually see

• The sandy island - low ground rising just clear of the lagoon.
• The tidal flats - the sand the falling tide uncovers around it.
• The flamingos - the birds working the shallows nearby.
• The low-tide crossing - the walk out when the water pulls back.

When to go

November to March is cooler and the bird numbers are highest. Tide governs whether you can walk or need a boat. Wind on the lagoon is strong most days.

Honest expectations

Timing the tide matters and getting it wrong means a long wait or a swim. There are no facilities on the island. Wind on the lagoon is constant and there is no shelter.
