Tu San Canyon
A narrow limestone gorge on the Nho Que river in northern Vietnam, seen from small boats that run between walls hundreds of metres high.

Tu San is the slot the Nho Que river has cut through the karst below Ma Pi Leng pass, and it is better understood from water level than from the road above. Small motorboats leave from landings reached by a steep switchback descent and run upstream for about half an hour, passing between vertical grey walls that close in until the sky is a strip. The water is flat and green, cold and slow moving. Boats usually turn at the narrowest point and drift back, and kayaks are available at some piers for a quieter version. The trip is short, but the change of scale from the viewpoint above is the reason to do it.
What you actually see
- The narrows - the stretch where the canyon walls close to a few dozen metres apart.
- Nho Que river - the still green water that makes the standard photograph from the pass above.
- The access descent - the steep switchback road down from the Happiness Road to the landings.
- Kayak sections - the quieter paddling option run from the same piers.
When to go
October to April is the dry season, when the water holds its colour and the descent road is at its safest. Boats run through the day; midday light reaches the canyon floor, while early and late trips leave the gorge in shadow. Heavy summer rain turns the river brown and can suspend departures for several days at a time.
Honest expectations
The boat ride is only about thirty to forty minutes each way and feels expensive for the time on the water, especially at peak hours when several boats run together and engines echo off the walls. The road down to the piers is steep, rough and unpleasant on a loaded motorbike. Life jackets are provided but boats are often full. The view from above sometimes beats the trip itself.
Nearby
Ma Pi Leng pass sits directly above, and Meo Vac town and the Dong Van plateau are within an hour.
