Quy Nhon

Quy Nhon has a long municipal beach along a crescent bay, a fishing harbour, and rather more history than its low profile suggests: this was the region of Vijaya, the Cham capital, and the towers at Thap Doi stand in the city with more in the countryside around. Han Mac Tu, one of the most significant Vietnamese poets of the twentieth century, died of leprosy at the Quy Hoa colony south of the city in 1940 aged twenty-eight, and his grave is on Ghenh Rang hill above the beach. The city stayed off the main tourist route for decades and has developed quickly in the last ten years.

What to look for

• A crescent city beach - with a working fishing harbour.
• Cham towers in the streets - Thap Doi, with more inland.
• Han Mac Tu's grave - on Ghenh Rang hill above the sea.
• Rapid recent development - after decades off the route.

When to go

February to August; the monsoon runs from about September. Two days.

Before you go

The beachfront is being built up quickly and some of it is a construction site. Surf and currents are dangerous in the monsoon months. The city is a working port rather than a resort. English is limited.
