The Tomb of Minh Mang

Minh Mang chose the site himself, and the tomb was built in the early 1840s to a plan of almost military symmetry. Everything sits on one axis: the main gate, opened once and then sealed, a courtyard of stone mandarins, elephants and horses, a stele pavilion with an inscription by his successor, the temple where he is honoured, then a bridge over a crescent lake to the Minh Lau pavilion, and finally a long causeway to a circular walled enclosure containing the grave. Pines, frangipani and lotus ponds fill the ground between. Nothing here is improvised, which makes it the clearest statement of Confucian order among the Hue tombs.

What you actually see

• Dai Hong Mon - the central gate, closed since the funeral, with side gates used by everyone else.
• The honour courtyard - ranks of stone officials, elephants and horses facing the stele pavilion.
• Minh Lau pavilion - a two-storey pavilion on a terrace between the lakes.
• The burial enclosure - a circular wall beyond a bridge, with the grave itself out of sight.

When to go

February to April is the driest and mildest season, since Hue's rains from September to December turn the paths to puddles. Mornings are quieter and the axis lines up well with the light. Reaching the tomb by boat and returning by road makes a pleasant half day. Buy the combined ticket in town if you plan to see more than one tomb.

Honest expectations

The burial enclosure is locked, so the walk ends at a gate rather than at anything to see. This is the farthest of the main tombs, and the entrance charge is per site, which adds up quickly. Some pavilions are fenced off during restoration. The grounds are large and open, and in the heat the walk from gate to enclosure is longer than it looks.
