Duong Lam Ancient Village

Duong Lam is a group of hamlets around Mong Phu, built from blocks of laterite, the rusty local stone that hardens in the air. Lanes run between walls the colour of dried blood, wide enough for a buffalo cart, and open at the centre onto the old village gate with its banyan tree and pond. Several dozen houses are more than a century old, some considerably older, with dark ironwood frames, tiled roofs and courtyards full of ceramic jars used for fermenting soy sauce. The communal house at Mong Phu is the ceremonial heart, and Mia Pagoda nearby holds hundreds of clay and lacquered statues. People still live and farm here, which is both the appeal and the limit.

When to go

October to April is dry and cool, and the laterite looks best in low afternoon light. Weekdays are quiet, while Sundays bring Hanoi families and photography groups. Go early to see the village working, with markets and animals in the lanes. Half a day including travel is realistic, and a bicycle rented at the gate saves walking in the heat.

Practical notes

The old houses stand scattered among modern concrete ones, so the effect is patchy rather than a preserved townscape. Ticketing at the entrance feels stiff, and the houses that open expect you to buy tea, sweets or soy sauce. Signage is minimal and mostly in Vietnamese. Anyone who has already seen Hoi An will find the architecture here plain.
