Ustyurt Plateau
A vast stone desert plateau in the northwest, ending in chalk escarpments above the old Aral shore.

The Ustyurt is a plateau of stone and clay covering an enormous area between the Caspian and the Aral, ending on its eastern side in chalk cliffs, the chinks, that drop several hundred metres to what was once the seabed. Almost nothing lives on it and there are no roads. Saiga antelope cross it on migration. Parts of the plateau in Uzbekistan are inside the Saigachy reserve, which UNESCO inscribed in 2023 within the Cold Winter Deserts of Turan.

When to go
April to May and September to October are the only tolerable windows. Summer heat is extreme and winter is bitter with high wind. Trips need several days.
Things to know
There are no roads, fuel, water or settlements; this requires a proper expedition with a driver who knows the ground. Permits are required for the reserve areas. Saiga sightings are very unlikely.
