Chimgan Mountains
Tashkent's mountain escape - chairlifts, walnut forests and a reservoir in the western Tian Shan, ninety minutes from the capital.

The western spur of the Tian Shan rises abruptly north-east of Tashkent, and the Chimgan area is where the capital escapes the heat: alpine meadows and walnut forests below jagged ridges, with the turquoise Charvak reservoir spread out at their feet. A chairlift climbs from Beldersay for the views, hiking routes run to Greater Chimgan's summit, and paragliders launch from the ridges. In winter the same slopes become Uzbekistan's ski area, modest by Alpine standards but genuinely snowy, and the drive up past the reservoir is spectacular in any season.
What you actually see
- The Beldersay chairlift - the easy ride up for ridge views.
- Charvak reservoir - the turquoise lake with summer swimming and boats.
- Greater Chimgan - the peak walk for hikers with a full day.
- Walnut and juniper forest - the wooded slopes on the approach valleys.
When to go
Summer brings hiking, swimming in the reservoir and relief from Tashkent's heat. September and early October give clear air and colour. Ski season runs roughly January and February. Spring can be muddy with snowmelt on the trails.
Honest expectations
Facilities are dated in places - lifts and hotels are Soviet-era in origin and vary widely in upkeep, though newer resorts have opened. Weekends bring crowds from Tashkent and slow traffic on the mountain road. Trails are lightly marked; a guide or GPS track helps for anything beyond the obvious routes. Ski terrain is limited and best treated as a novelty rather than a destination in itself.
Nearby
Charvak reservoir, the Ugam-Chatkal national park and Tashkent.
