Valle Eden

Valle Edén is a wooded valley southwest of Tacuarembó with a stream running through it, crossed by a swaying suspension footbridge that is the standard photograph of the place. An old railway station stands in the valley, and beside it the Carlos Gardel museum, in a building that the town's claim connects to the singer's family. Walking paths run along the stream and up the slopes into native woodland. The valley sits where the basalt gives way to sandstone, which is why it holds trees and water in a department that is mostly open grazing country, and it has been a local excursion for a century.

When to go

March to November is most comfortable. Weekends bring visitors from Tacuarembo. The stream runs low in dry summers.

Honest expectations

The valley is small and a couple of hours covers it. The Gardel connection is contested. Museum hours are limited.
