Cerro Batovi

Cerro Batoví stands alone above the plain north of Tacuarembó, a flat-sided cone of sandstone about two hundred metres above the surrounding country and visible for a long way. Its shape gave it its Guaraní name, and it has become the emblem of the department. It sits on private land, so the usual visit is from the roadside or the base, and climbing needs permission from the landowner.

What you actually see

• The cone - an isolated flat-sided hill rising above the plain.
• The northern grassland - the open cattle country spreading around it.
• The sandstone - the rock the hill is cut from, exposed on its sides.
• The roadside view - the standard vantage from Route 5.

When to go

March to November is most comfortable. Morning and evening light show the shape best. Summer heat on the open plain is heavy.

Honest expectations

The hill is on private land and climbing requires the owner's permission. There is no visitor infrastructure of any kind. The usual visit is a photograph from the road.
