The National Mall is the ceremonial heart of the United States, a long green lawn in Washington stretching from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, lined by the towering Washington Monument, the war and presidential memorials, and the free museums of the Smithsonian. It is where the nation gathers, protests and remembers.

When to go
Late March to April for the famous cherry blossom around the Tidal Basin; spring and autumn for mild weather. Summer is hot and humid, winter cold but quiet.
Honest expectations
The Mall is long, so seeing the memorials and museums means a lot of walking, and a single day only samples it. The Smithsonian museums are free but vast, so choose rather than attempt all. Summer heat and humidity are draining.
