Fort Frederik

Fort Frederik stands on the Frederiksted waterfront, a compact Danish fort of 1760 painted the deep red the Danes used, and its parade ground is where Governor von Scholten declared the emancipation of the enslaved population of the Danish West Indies in July 1848, after thousands gathered outside the walls demanding it. The fort now holds a museum covering that history and the town's later years. It was also here that the first foreign salute to the American flag is said to have been fired, in 1776, a claim the town makes prominently.

Background

Denmark-Norway built the fort between 1752 and 1760 at the north end of Frederiksted, south of where Mahogany Road meets VI 631. Its walls are painted red and white, unlike the yellow and white of Fort Christiansværn across the island. A museum and an art gallery occupy the building, open on weekdays from 8:30am to 4pm and on Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm, and admission was $10 in 2026. The fort joined the Frederiksted Historic District in 1976, gained its own National Register listing in 1996 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1997. Facing it is Emancipation Park, beside the Eliza James-McBean Clock Tower, where paths wind among large mahogany trees and statues of notable Virgin Islanders.

When to go

December to April is the dry season. The fort keeps set hours and closes on some days. Emancipation Day, 3 July, is marked here.

The museum is small and the displays are dated in places. Frederiksted itself is quiet outside cruise days. Two hours covers the whole site.
