The gardens occupy the site of a Danish sugar estate whose works were built, as archaeology later showed, directly over a pre-Columbian settlement dated to well over a thousand years old, so the ground here holds three periods. Sixteen acres are planted among the ruins: a cactus garden in the old rum shop yard, orchids under shade, a rainforest section, a palm collection and native Caribbean planting, with the mill, the great house foundations and the stone arches of the works standing among them. It is run by a volunteer society, which shows in both the care and the modest scale.

What you actually see

  • Gardens among ruins - planting laid out through the sugar works.
  • The cactus garden - in the yard of the old rum shop.
  • The orchid house - the shaded collection.
  • The layered history - Taíno settlement under the Danish estate.

When to go

December to April is the dry season and the most comfortable for walking. Mornings are coolest. It keeps limited hours and closes on some days, so check. Two hours covers it comfortably.

Honest expectations

It is small and volunteer-run, so maintenance varies between sections and some areas are in better condition than others. Hurricane damage in 2017 set the collections back considerably. Labelling is patchy. It takes ninety minutes and does not justify a long journey on its own.

Nearby

Frederiksted is fifteen minutes west; Estate Whim is nearby.
