Mount Eagle

Mount Eagle rises to around three hundred and fifty metres in the northwest of St Croix and is the highest ground on the island, standing above the belt of moist forest that Crucians call the rainforest, where mahogany, kapok and tree ferns grow along the Scenic Road. The descent from the ridge toward Cane Bay is known as the Beast, a climb that features in the island's Ironman race.

When to go

December to April is the dry season with clearer views. The forest is greenest after the autumn rains. The Scenic Road is rough after heavy rain.

What to expect

A hiking trail from West Scenic Road leads to the summit, but most of the experience is the road and the forest. The Scenic Road is unpaved in stretches and rough. Views are intermittent through the trees.
