St Michael's Mount

St Michael's Mount rises from Mount's Bay like Cornwall's answer to its Norman twin - and the kinship is real: in the 11th century the island was granted to the Benedictines of Mont-Saint-Michel, whose priory church still crowns the granite. The visit begins with the tide: at low water a cobbled causeway strikes out from Marazion across the wet sand, at high water small boats shuttle the channel in season, and misjudging the timetable is the island's oldest tourist tradition. Above the little harbour village, the castle - home of the St Aubyn family since the 1650s and now run with the National Trust - climbs through armouries, the rococo Blue Drawing Room and the priory church, while subtropical terraced gardens cling improbably to the southern cliffs, gulf-stream planting thriving in the salt light. Legend adds the giant Cormoran to the geology, and the summit views sweep the whole bay from Penzance toward the Lizard.

When to go

April to October for castle and garden opening and the boat service; check the tide tables first, as the crossing schedules the day. The gardens open on limited days - verify before travelling for them.

Honest expectations

The climb to the castle is steep, cobbled and uneven - proper shoes matter and it defeats buggies and some knees. Tide timing rules everything; getting caught mid-causeway is genuinely dangerous, so obey the posted times. Summer crowds funnel through narrow paths, and castle plus garden tickets add up for families.
