Portree

Portree is the largest settlement on Skye, with around 2,300 people, built around a deep natural harbour sheltered by the headland of Ben Chracaig and the cliffs of the Sound of Raasay. The name comes from Port an Righ, the king's port, associated with a visit by James V in 1540. The row of houses along the quay, painted in different colours, is the town's standard image, though the painting scheme is a relatively recent decision. The Lump, a wooded headland above the harbour with a folly tower, was the site of public gatherings and games. Boat trips run from the harbour to see sea eagles, which were reintroduced to Scotland and are now regular here, and seals. The town is the practical base for the whole island.

When to go

May to September for boats and full opening; Skye is extremely busy in July and August and accommodation books months ahead. Shoulder seasons are calmer with most businesses still open.

Before you go

Portree is small and its facilities are stretched by island visitor numbers, with limited parking and long waits for food in season. Accommodation across Skye is expensive and scarce. The town is a base rather than a destination in itself.

The Old Man of Storr is ten minutes north; the Cuillin and Sligachan lie south.
