Vinnytsia

Vinnytsia sits on the Southern Buh in the middle of Podillia, a city of a few hundred thousand with a long riverfront that it has made the centre of its public life. A floating fountain on the river plays to music and projected light on summer evenings and is the thing the city is known for across Ukraine. The old centre keeps churches of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, a Jesuit and a Dominican complex among them, and a water tower turned into a landmark.

Background

The name first appears in 1363, and one explanation traces it to the Proto-Slavic *věno, a bride price. English writers once used the forms Winnica or Winnicza, then Vinnitsa between the early 19th century and the 1990s. No city in the historic region of Podillia is larger, with 370,814 people in the urban hromada as of July 2026, on 140 km2. Kyiv lies about 260 kilometres to the northeast, Lviv 369 kilometres to the west and Odesa 429 kilometres to the south-southeast. January averages -5.8 °C and July 18.3 °C. Landmarks include the Baroque Transfiguration Cathedral, the Baroque Capuchin Church, Saint Nicholas Church and the Academic Music and Drama Theater.
